St Helens is well know for the production of quality glass. It has good rail links to the rest of the UK inc London. It`s between Liverpool (Beatles, theatres, museums, shopping etc) about 20 miles and Manchester also about 20 miles offering lots of museums, theatres, shopping and restaurants. Both cities would be great for football fans.
Well-worth days out might be Snowdonia in mid-Wales, the Lake District to the north plus the Yorkshire Moors and the Derbyshire Peak District within 50 miles. Great for walking/exploring. Many places are easily accessible via public transport. e.g. A GBP6 Merseyrail one-day ticket will get you on trains, buses in the merseyside area as far as the walled Roman Fort Town of Chester to the south and the coastal resort of Southport to the north. The ticket also includes the famous `Ferry across the Mersey` (Remember the song?)
Heading north there are good motorway links to Scotland. See Carlisle and Hadrians Wall on your way to Glasgow or go across to the east for the Castle of Edinburgh in Scotland. Heading south by train to London is 2hrs 20mins.
