About the location

Watlington is a large village/small town. At the end of a no through road, the cottage is 2 minutes walk from the characterful High Street, where there are all the shops you will need on a day to day basis including a Coop, chemist, deli with cafe, butcher, the famous Orange Bakery, plus other independent businesses ranging from shoes to chocolate! There are country walks from the front door, into the Chilterns & along the Icknield Way, so no need to get the car out. Plenty of excellent pubs in the area - two in Watlington to walk to (as well as an Indian restaurant & a fish & chip take away), and several more lovely country pubs to choose from just 5 minutes in the car. Midsomer Murders films regularly in the local area and has even filmed in our street - at least twice! You are 10 minutes drive from the River Thames & an excellent riverside cafe at Benson.

15 miles away is Oxford, with its ancient colleges, dreaming spires, Oxford Canal, covered market, Ashmolean Museum, river cruises & punting. There are also many literary locations linked to Tolkien, CS Lewis, Lewis Carroll & Philip Pullman (among others), and of course Inspector Morse and, more recently, Endeavour were both filmed in Oxford.

Henley-on-Thames is just 7 miles away with its independent shops & boutiques, antiques, cafes, market square, River & Rowing Museum, and famous Regatta in July.

Also nearby for a day out are the Cotswolds, with many picturesque towns and villages, and Shakespeare`s Stratford upon Avon.

Central London is just an hour and a quarter`s drive down the M40 for a day out or a west end show or, as an alternative to driving, you can take the "Oxford Tube" which is a coach that runs regularly between Oxford and London, the nearest stop being 3 miles from Watlington.
