Quirky home in charming coastal town

Built in the 1920s, our house has been a grocers shop, a sweet shop, even a hairdressers. Now it is an attractive home just minutes from the sea.

Downstairs at the back of the house there is an open-plan kitchen, dining room and sitting area which opens out onto an attractive sunny, south-facing garden. The kitchen has a dishwasher, washing machine, bean-to-cup coffee machine and granite worktops. The shop at the front of the house is now a cosy living room with a large corner sofa and large TV (with Amazon Prime, Sky, Netflix and Nintendo Switch). Upstairs there are four bedrooms: one with a kingsize bed, the second (my daughter's) with a small double bed and the third (my son's) with a single bed. The attic is largely used as an office but there is a comfortable, full-height, double inflatable bed. There is a bathroom with a bath and shower upstairs and a second WC downstairs.

We have plenty of toys (Lego, playmobil etc), books and games at your disposal. Living just five minutes from the sea we have plenty of things for the beach - including a two-person inflatable dinghy, kayak, a beach trolley and various buckets, spades and water pistols.

We also have a cat, Polly. She`s quite shy but lovely - and she can either stay or go to her grandparents.

About the location

Whitstable is a beautiful coastal town, full of little alleyways, beach huts, pubs and clapboard-clad fishermans' cottages. The busy harbour with its fishing boats and whelk and oyster stalls is a popular attraction and the beautiful pebble beach is perfect for crabbing and sea-combing. There are nice walks along to Tankerton and Seasalter or you can sit and watch the sunset over the sea from the famous Neptune pub. The High Street has a bohemian charm with independent craft shops, galleries, delicatessens and boutiques trading side-by-side with butchers, greengrocers and bakeries selling local produce. There are some excellent restaurants from those with Michelin stars to excellent tapas and wonderful fish restaurants. There is plenty to amuse the children: sailing, cycling and lovely parks.

Further afield you have the city of Canterbury with its cathedral. There are typical Kentish orchards towards the market town of Faversham and the north Downs. To the east, there is the historical seaside resort of Herne Bay with lovely walks towards Reculver. Just a short train ride away there's Margate and Ramsgate with sandy beaches and vibrant art scenes.
