300 year old cottage near Dartmoor National Park

Our home is a small 300 year-old cottage to which we have added more rooms. It is situated in the centre of a lovely ancient Devon village with friendly neighbours. It is not luxurious but we think you would find it pleasant and comfortable.

The living room has satellite TV, hi-fi, computer with wi-fi, lots of books and cds. We have some books, games and toys for children. You can step out onto a terrace and garden from the living room at the back of the house. This is a very pleasant place for sitting and eating outside, looking out, as it does, onto fields and rolling hills beyond. We have another garden with fruit trees and a vegetable patch across the quiet road outside the house. This is not unusual in rural Devon.

The dining room has a low oak-beamed ceiling (in fact all the ceilings are quite low (so tall people have to watch out!) and an open fireplace. The kitchen is fully-equipped but small. It includes an electric cooker, fridge freezer, microwave oven and dishwasher. Elsewhere there is a washing machine and drier. Four bedrooms: 2 with 5ft king size beds; 1 with a single bed which converts into 2 singles or a king size; 1 with a single bed.

Bathrooms: upstairs with an electric shower over the bath, a bidet and toilet; downstairs a shower, sink and toilet. Parking: although we do not have a garage, there is off-the-road parking alongside the house.

About the location

We live in a very pretty village, about 120 metres above sea level, in the middle of Devon in beautiful south west England. Fields, woods and rivers surround Zeal Monachorum, making it a perfect place for walking. There is a fishing lake within walking distance and several golf courses in the area. Only a few minutes walk away is a pleasant pub that has a restaurant, squash courts, an indoor swimming pool, indoor and outdoor children`s play areas. Not far away the historic towns of Crediton, Okehampton and Exeter are good shopping places.

Devon really is an ideal place for a holiday, with a spectacular coastline and almost continuous coastpath. There are blue flag beaches and sea including renowned surfing spots about 30-50 kilometres away. We are almost midway between Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks both very beautiful wild places. The Roman city of Exeter with cathedral and university is about 35 minutes drive. As you might expect, the city has large and varied shops, theatres, museums and an active cultural life. Historic and lively Plymouth is on the far edge of Dartmoor. The nearest part of Cornwall, with its beautiful coastline and sandy beaches and legendary sites like Tintagel, is about an hour`s drive, the Eden Project about 1½ hours. Bath and Bristol make for good day trips and it`s even possible to get to London by train from Exeter in just over 2.5 hours.

The nearest airport is Exeter about 45 minutes, Bristol airport is about 1.5 hours. One does need a car in Devon; public transport is very limited outside the towns, although there are some rather scenic rail trips that are worth trying. We should mention that the local roads in Devon are very narrow, often single track, which some exchangers have found a little nerve-racking, at first, but they are quiet and people quickly get accustomed to them.
