Chateau de Bardies

We have owned our rambling old chateau in the foothills of the Pyrenees for twenty years. It truly is a home, filled with antiques, books, paintings, sculptures, CDs and LPs (if people still play them!) and fine china. Because I love to cook, it also has an excellently equipped kitchen. There is a beautiful garden and swimming pool, too. I spend several months of the year there but like to come home for a month in the summer for various events. Usually I`m in the UK for June [the most beautiful month in the garden at Bardies, when the roses are in full bloom] but this year I`m in the UK for the month of July. I hate to leave the garden in summer and would love to share our home with people who love the things that we do - and are happy to keep the garden watered.

About the location

We are in the Couserans, equidistant between the Atlantic and the mediterranean coasts, directly south of Toulouse at an altitude of 500 meters. On a clear day you can see Mont Valier from the top of our little road and there are spectacular walks on both sides of the valley. St Girons, a lovely, traditional market town at the confluence of the Salat and Lez rivers (with a superb Saturday morning market, a joy to all food lovers) is eight kilometres south of us. The Tour de France passes by in July most years. We are an hour from the nearest ski resort (Guzet Neige), an hour from Mirepoix and an hour and a half from Carcassonne. From nearby Foix (40 minutes) you can access the Canigou through spectacular scenery. For lovers of history, there are all the major Cathar sites to explore, as well as the Chemin de la Liberté, the only evasion route to remain open for the duration of the second world war.
