About the location

Spittal is a tiny village, 20 mins walk from the main town of Berwick upon Tweed. It was once famous for its spa healing waters. In days gone by visitors flocked to this lovely spot arriving by train. Spittal has a local well stocked village shop and a couple of pubs. Berwick and Spittal are accessible off the A1 approximately 60 miles from both Edinburgh and Newcastle upon Tyne. Berwick also has good train links from both the north [Edinburgh 45 minutes] and the south [from London within 4 hours]
If you have previously visited England’s most remote town of Berwick upon Tweed, set on the Scottish Borders you will know how beautiful this coastal area is. If you are coming for the first time you are in for a treat! With many beautiful walks on the doorstep and sights such as Berwick’s Elizabethan Walls, Bastions, castle ruins & River Tweed walks, short coastal drives to Bamburgh, Holy Island and inland delights such as Norham Castle and Northumberland National Parks your days will be filled.

Berwick upon Tweed is a very historic walled town which, over the centuries was strategically fought over by the Scottish and the English, changing hands at least 13 times. It now offers a selection of shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. If you like real ales try out The Curfew & The Barrels on Bridge Street or The Pilot at Low Greenes or relax with a lovely glass of wine or spirits in Atelier also on Bridge Street. As well as a selection of good eateries Bridge St is where you will find all the artisan shops in town and well worth a visit. Historical houses and castles are in abundance in North Northumberland and the Borders; Paxton House, Mellerstein, Manderston to name a few. Boat trips, scuba - diving & surfing from Eyemouth or St Abbs will take you closer to our wildlife while you are also welcome to use our 2 seater kayak if you fancy a paddle without getting your feet wet in the North Sea. Of course you are very welcome to just relax on our very quiet beach [10 steps away] or light up the BBQ in our pretty garden – using as many herbs as you like!
