The main thing to be aware of is what the Mission district of California is like - details on the website. It's urban, a bit edgy - it's not a cute Cotswold village and it won't be for everyone!
There is good public transport (buses and MUNI) to San Francisco, but to see the surrounding area you need a car. Zip cars are nearby, if you just need transport occasionally.
