Excellent train links to historic Edinburgh (1.5hr), Durham (20 mins) and York (1hr) and the Lake district Horseracing 5 mins, mini-golf/golf courses, country walks, v good restaurants and pubs 10 min walk, swimming pool, supermarket 5 mins walk.
