Within five minutes walk a good range of shops, four real ale pubs, wine bar, four restaurants and a supermarket. You can walk or cycle up the wooded river valley opposite the house (see picture 8) and in 20 minutes you are in the Peak District National Park (Arbor Low stone circle, the caves of Castleton, Stanage Edge and Kinder Scout).

Sheffield itself is the greenest city in England: an excellent base for a cultural or activity break. There are regular buses for the 15 minutes journey into the city centre with all the amenities you would expect of the UK’s fourth largest city. Direct trains to London and Manchester, and to historic York, Edinburgh and Lincoln.

Cinemas, theatres, swimming, cycling, walking, golf, rock climbing, horse-riding, top sports venues and shopping mall all within twenty minutes driving. For children the alpaca farm is nearby, plus three other city farms - one for rare breeds, one environmental, the third concentrating on domestic and farmyard animals, ice skating, roller blading, Magna Science Adventure Centre plus dozens of parks and open spaces. Sheffield has a number of historic houses nearby. Our favourite is Renishaw Hall with its beautiful gardens, but we also love Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Hardwick Hall and Italianate Brodsworth with its magnificent Victorian fern garden.
