2 1/2 hours drive to Lake Taupo for fishing and all related water sports, Mt Ruapehu for skiing and another 45 minutes to Rotorua for all the Maori Culture you could wish for. Wellington the capital is only 3 plus hours away by car and Auckland 6 hours.
