About the location
The village of Kefalas is situated in the Apokoronas region in Western Crete. It is roughly mid way between Chania and Rethymno and both of these attractive Venetian cities are within 30/40 minutes. The village itself is very pretty and has two supermarkets where good reasonably priced food is on offer and there are two small supermarkets for everyday needs. The area has something for everyone. The small seaside resorts of Alymirida, Kalives and Georgeopolis are within 15minutes with beutiful sandy beaches and numerous eateries.
There are interesting walks in the immediate vicinity when you can tear yourself away from the the pool or beach. In Chania there are are a number of museums and a very beautiful harbour lined with tempting restaurants and boat trips can be taken from the harbour. The same can be said of Rethymno. For those who want to venture further afield it is possible to take a day trip to Heraklion and the Minoan city of Knossosor or various other archeological remains in the area. There are numerous gorges waiting to be walked including the well known Samaria gorge. It is also possible to take a day trip to Spinalonga, the island made famous by Victoria Hislop in her book of the same name. From Rethymno you can take a day trip to the alluring island of Santorini.
The area of Western Crete with the towering White Mountains, pretty towns and village and verdant olive groves is not as well known as its Eastern more touristy counterpart but it is well worth a visit and never fails to interest and enthrall.
