About the location
Small town nestled at the edge of the National Park. Killarney is full of places to see. It is a lovely town just to wander around, especially in the evenings, when there is music playing in a lot of the pubs and hotels. At all times, you are only 5 minutes walk from Killarney House and Gardens, which lead into the National Park.
We love to relax in the foyers of hotels, and our favourites are Royal Hotel in town, with a small lovely lobby to relax in, good reasonable lunches, and lovely morning or afternoon tea. The Great Southern hotel is a great place to read the papers or a book - treat yourselves to tea and scones! Plenty of good restaurants to enjoy - Bricin, The Smokehouse, the Plaza hotel.
Muckross House, only 20 minute cycle from the house. There are plenty of lovely walks, lovely restaurant, and it has lovely gardens and trees. You can also visit the house itself, built to accommodate Queen Victoria on her visit to Kerry. There is also a visitor’s experience of life in Ireland back through the last century. If you find the walking around tiring, there is a little bus that collects you at each of the different houses on the estate.
Ross Castle: There are lovely walks or trails to cycle. If you like, you can cycle to Ross Castle and from there, you can go through the National Park, or the Demesne, as the locals call it Here you will see the famous Kerry cows, jet black and also the Sika deer. From Ross Castle, it is possible to take a boat out to Inisfallen Island, or up to Lord Brandon’s cottage. Also from Lord Brandon’s cottage, you can cycle through the Gap of Dunloe to Kate Kearney’s cottage and back to Killarney. This trip can also be taken with the jarveys.
St. Mary’s Cathedral – Built in the mid 19th century, it is the seat of the Bishop of Kerry. The church was designed by Pugin, and is particularly beautiful in the early morning or late evening, with the light spilling in its rose window.
Lots to see and do and enjoy !
