Smugglers Cottage

Home exchange
Our home is a charming c300year old cottage, straight out of a novel. Situated a few minutes walk from the North Cornwall coast aka the `wreckers coast` it feels like Daphne du Murrier territory! In fact the 12th century Bush Inn, across the lane from our cottage is supposedly the original Jamaica Inn (and offers fantastic food in a breathtaking setting).

Hobbit house in feel, it comprises a series of cosy rooms with wonky walls and low ceilings- a colourful `unfitted` kitchen overlooks the rear garden, adjoining a cosy dining room to seat 6. The dining room steps down to a `reading` room with log burner, lamps, sofa and arm chair- think Sherlock Holmes` rural hideaway, From here our snug study with steep staircase to the bedrooms is an inspiring place to write your postcards or your 60,000 word Magnus Opus. The study steps down to our `cinema` room. bringing you into the 20th century with large TV, movie memorabilia and a corner sofa/bed- this room has stunning sea views. A utility room with WC, washing machine & storage completes the ground floor.

Upstairs there are 2 charming double rooms both with ensuite bathrooms. Bedroom one has marvellous sea views and an ensuite with bath tub. The second larger Room has an adjoining small area which we call a sleeping/reading nook with a desk and it`s own built-in king sized double bed. This room would be ideal for a family as it has 2 separate double beds.

The garden can be a sunny spot (when it`s not lashing down with weather!) offering peace & solitude. It has trees & flowers, tables for alfresco meals, benches and lounging chairs and magical sea views.

All in all Springfield Farm Cottage is a cosy, rambling haven, perched moments from the wild north Cornish coast.

About the location

Springfield Cottage is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is in the hamlet of crosstown a few minutes stroll from the dramatic cliffs of the north Cornish coastline.

From the cottage you can be in wooded valleys or high on the cliffs within a few minutes. There are a sprinkling of dwellings in Crosstown including an excellent 15th century, smugglers pub, a beautiful, ancient church and award-winning 12thcentury tearooms (that serve up the best cream teas).

The nearest beach- Stanbury Mouth is a breathtaking 50min walk along the southwest coast path (or a 5 minute drive). It`s magical and especially beautiful at low tide. There are many other beautiful, wild beaches nearby-Duckpool, Sandymouth, Marsland, Welcombe.

The closest town is vibrant Bude (10 miles distant), famed for it`s surfing beaches, independent shops and gentle, laid back feel. A visit to Bude`s Electric bakery is a must. In just under an hour by car will take you to Tintagel and King Arthurs castle and St Nectans Glen (a fantastic waterfall in the midst of a temperate rainforest). Port Issac and then Padstow are a little further and well worth a visit. In neighbouring Devon the famously steep, cobbled fishing village of Clovelly is a 30 min drive, Bideford, a larger town with it`s excellent Burton art gallery and wonderful Cafe du Parc as well as the chic.

Sunshine and Snow shop/cafe is a 40 min drive as is Appledore-a charming fishing village with teeny, narrow streets, artisan bakery, award-winning deli and overall arty vibe. And just 10 mins drive or a 50 min walk across the border into Devon is Welcombe- where you`ll find a beach, The Old Smithy pub and a crab shack. Magnificent walks and vistas abound in this magical and atmospheric slice of the Southwest.
