Tranquil holiday home in bush setting close to the beach

We designed and built this little house fourteen years ago. Two sleeping units and a central living unit with a kitchen, dining and small area with chairs and a sofa make for cosy living. It`s simple but very comfortable. There is a woodburner for the very occasional days when it`s a bit chilly outside.
The house is virtually off-grid as Waiheke has no reticulated water or sewarage (but it is connected to mains electricity) and there are rain water tanks and a waste system on site.
The house is for people who don`t mind a bit of a walk as the house is situated off a zig zag on a hill. The secluded beach is about a hundred metres away. There are some lovely bush walks nearby.
The ferry connects from downtown Auckland and it takes about forty minutes to get to the island. Public transport on the island is very good and the bus stop is handily located at the top of a public pathway.
Oneroa, the nearest town, has plenty of cafes and restaurants, a cinema, a library, and good shops for supplies. There is a much bigger supermarket in Ostend.
We love this house because we can sit all day and look at the sea and the beautiful native birds which flit in and out of the trees but, handily, it is also very easy to get to shops and the city.

About the location

Hekerua Bay is at the end of a small valley within walking distance of Oneroa. It is well-connected by public transport. The beach is secluded and mostly used by the residents of the bay. A lot of volunteer work has gone into bush restoration in the valley and, consequently, the bird life is flourishing.
